Segmented Cutting Board
For the past few years I have been wanting to try a segmented design cutting board. Well now I can say that I have. It was a simple and basic design with 72 pieces. Most, if not all of the thought goes into they layout before you actually cut anything. I started by following a design that I found online but quickly found out I didn’t t have as much material (wood) as I needed to get started. I switched it up a little bit so I could start right away with what I had on hand. This project is the first of several segmented boards I plan building. So check back for more great pictures and info.
Size
The woods used in this board are 2, white oak and teak. It provides a popping contrast which I have grown to love. The size is 14″ x 9.5″ x 1.75″, for my it’s on the small to medium side. I prefer larger boards, but then again they are harder to store kitchen.
Finishing
The first thing is to wipe off any excess glue while still wet, it’s much cleaner and you don’t risk a chance of the glue discoloring or staining the wood. After removing the clamps, I first use a small block planer to remove any high spots and dried glue drops. From there I use a 5″ orbital sander with: 80, 120 and 220 grit sand paper. Then I use steel wool. Now comes the application of the butcher block oil, which is just a food safe / grade mineral oil.
All Finished
Here is the finished project. Soon to be on it’s way to Oregon. A new gift to an old friend.
The Scraps
This is whats left after trimming.
Note: Do not use vegetable or olive oil in place of the food safe mineral oil. The reason is because the vegetable and olive oil has the possibility to go rancid and ruin your board.
